COPYRIGHT
CLEARANCE CENTER FORM
 |
HOW TO OBTAIN PERMISSION: |
Copyright
law has recently been strengthened by several court decisions, and special
emphasis has been placed on materials illegally copied for use in the
educational environment. The penalties are substantial and are being
assessed to the person making the illegal copies. In order to
provide the most efficient service possible and comply with copyright
laws, the University of Nevada, Reno Copy Center will assist in obtaining
authorization to reproduce copyrighted materials. They subscribe to
national copyright clearance centers and can answer questions about the
process.
 |
PROCEDURES FOR USING THE SERVICE: |
- All authorization requests must be submitted
on the
Copyright Clearance
Center Form. It is recommended that all authorization
requests be submitted to the Copy Center at least one month
prior to the date when the materials are needed. Upon
receipt, the Copy Center will immediately log each request and fax it
to the appropriate clearance center to begin the approval process.
- As permission to copy each item is granted,
the Copy Center will contact the person making the request to ask if
they wish to proceed with copying the approved materials. If
permission is denied, the clearance center may provide instructions
for contacting the publisher directly to request approval.
- All materials approved by the appropriate
clearance center and that are produced at the Copy Center will be charged a
processing fee plus actual copying costs and any applicable
copyright/publishers' fees.
- Items which are approved for copying are
only authorized for use during the semester noted on the request
form. If the same materials are needed for subsequent semesters,
the items must be resubmitted on a new request form and the approval
process repeated.
For disseminating the approved materials,
the requestor has the following options:
Pay for the entire cost and distribute the
materials themselves, have the Copy Center maintain the master copies of
the approval materials, and have users purchase the items on a
"will call" basis; or place the materials on reserve at the
library. (Items placed on reserve through this process are bound
by the same time constraints as noted in #4 above.)
The university Bookstore will refer all
requests for copyright clearance to the Copy Center.
-
This service is completely optional and the
requestor may choose to obtain publisher approval in any other
fashion.
For additional information, contact the Copy
Center, Central Services Building, Room #210, telephone 784-6810.
